The book contains large woodcuts, all but 8 original to this text, 24 small cuts of saints and prophets, and a series of 14 different border styles. Book Illustration Because the printing of movable type, like the woodcut, is a relief process, once the printing press and movable type were invented in the mid-fifteenth century, woodcuts provided the ideal means for illustrating early printed books. The woodblocks could be placed alongside the type in the flatbed press and printed at the same. Block books, also called xylographica, are short books of up to 50 leaves, block printed in Europe in the second half of the 15th century as woodcuts with blocks carved to include both text and illustrations. The content of the books was nearly always religious, aimed at a popular audience, and a few titles were often reprinted in several editions using new woodcuts.

This form of printmaking lends itself to illustration in children's books. My posts this week will focus on different woodcut artists who have done children's books.
